Online Dispute Resolution (ODR)

Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) is a method of resolving disputes through the use of digital platforms and technology. It encompasses a variety of processes that facilitate negotiation, mediation, and arbitration without requiring the parties to be physically present in the same location.

ODR leverages the internet to provide tools and services that allow parties to communicate, share documents, and conduct proceedings virtually. This process can be particularly beneficial in situations where parties are geographically distant, as it can save time and costs associated with travel and physical meetings. ODR can be utilized in various contexts, including consumer disputes, family law issues, and business conflicts.

For instance, in a consumer dispute, a buyer and a seller may use an ODR platform to negotiate a resolution over a defective product. The platform may offer features such as video conferencing, chat rooms, and document sharing, enabling the parties to reach a settlement more efficiently. In more complex cases, ODR can involve trained neutral third parties who facilitate discussions or make binding decisions based on the evidence presented in an online format.
